What next, Pappagallos and Rudi Gernreich? Maybe not, but Marimekko, 1262 Third [72nd/73rd] 212.628.8400,, seems fresher than ever lately. That may be in part because two young American designers, Robert Segal and Alicia Rosauer, have been hired, bringing some lighter and softer shades to the line's primary colors.

The Finnish company also has moved its New York store to this new location, designed with full windows onto the street and a brilliant white interior that's a perfect backdrop for the vivid hues. In addition to the fresh looks, each season brings back some patterns from the 1950s and 1960s. Marimekko has home furnishings, fabric by the yard (they'll make items to order) and apparel. How are the clothes? There are some bold colors, but mostly they're toned down enough so you won't look like you're wearing a throw pillow.
