NYC Inns, B & Bs, and Guest Houses

Want a standard double for your family or friends? Perhaps they want to stay over for a night next month. December 13th, say. A night at the St. Regis? For a superior room (aka standard room)? $795. We love luxury hotels, but unless they're replacing the turn-down chocolates with a basket of white truffles, we can think of other ways to unload some cash. Here are a few alternatives. Be sure to check the details carefully: many have minimum stays (three nights is common), some don't take credit cards, have elevators, or allow young children. Prices can vary considerably based on room size, time of year, length of stay, and whether Mercury is in retrograde, for all we know. In no particular order…

Rooms to Let
Ye Olde West Village is on offer at this mid-19th-century house. Around $200.

The two joined townhouses that make up this rather luxe inn were built in 1834 and the interior is a good long wallow in Victoriana. Those with a doily fetish should book immediately. Around $350.

The 1888 house on Riverside Drive and 76th has been tenderly cared for, so you get rooms with character and some remarkable details — the carved alabaster mantelpiece comes to mind. Around $225.

The Inn on 23rd
Roomy rooms are the hallmark of this attractive Chelsea inn, all with private bath. now with high-speed internet access, too. Around $225.

Country Inn the City
Creaking floors, four-poster beds, and free, high-speed internet are among the many appealing virtues of this inn, hidden within an 1891 limestone building on an UWS side street. Around $200.

Bed and Breakfast on the Park
Charles and Camilla didn't stay here, but Queen Victoria, if she were alive, would surely feel at home at this Park Slope beauty. Around $250.

Efuru Guest House
A restored Harlem brownstone, with simply furnished guest rooms and a small back garden. Around $100.

Loralei B & B
Spacious and gracious, this beautifully restored Victorian B & B in Ditmas Park has earned fans for the property, the hospitality, and the price. Around $125.

Abingdon Guest House
Wood floors, brick walls, tin ceilings, and heaps of good taste help create the inviting, authentically 'Village' feel here. Around $200.

Akwaaba Mansion
Not only is this restored 1860s Bed-Stuy inn as elegant as all get-out, there are some uniquely themed rooms, too: the Jumping the Broom suite (jumping the broom is a West African wedding tradition) and the Black Memorabilia room. Around $150.
