Around town this weekend, courtesy of the skint: a daily listing of free and cheap things to buy, see, do and eat in New York.

fri-sun: 50 galleries offer artwork starting at $100 at the annual affordable art fair. the tunnel (chelsea), free-$7.50 tickets here (plus ticket fees, reg $15), free hours 10/4 6-8pm.

fri 6pm doors, 7pm show (thru 10/30): the empire drive-in, a full-scale drive-in movie theater made of 60 cars and trucks reclaimed from a brooklyn junkyard, kicks off with vintage silent shorts accompanied by deerhoof's freg saunier and 30 casio-playing keyboardists, plus jim jarmusch's night on earth (1991). the new york hall of science, $15.

sat 11am-3pm: all pups are welcome at the my dog loves central park fair, with competitions, microchipping, training tips, kids activities, giveaways, more. central park bandshell (mid-park @ 72nd st).

sat 11am-6pm: 21st annual chile pepper festival features 40+ food vendors of hot sauce, salsa, pickles, kimchi, jams, chocolates and more, plus workshops, live music and dance performances all set in brooklyn's beautiful botanical gardens. $20 admission includes full access to the gardens..

sat 11am-7pm: the festival of medical history + arts honors artists, writers, and thinkers who had an impact on the world of medicine with 20+ free talks from the likes of oliver sacks (the man who mistook his wife for a hat) with awesome titles like a few thefts of some famous skulls, books bound in human skin, and what it feels like to have an epileptic fit. additional classes and an after party require paid admission. new york academy of medicine (103rd st @ 5th ave).

sat 12-5pm: explore green getaways and local day trips at the third annual escapemaker local food + travel expo, featuring food and wine samples, travel prizes, more. brooklyn borough hall, free (rsvp).

sun 11am, 1pm: alpacas, tortoises, dogs and cats living together… all are welcome at the all-faith blessing of the animals + fair at the cathedral church of st. john the divine. free passes available starting @ 9:15am.

sun 12-8pm: in addition to being a massive indian celebration, the 26th annual deepavali festival will also include an attempt to break the world record for largest bhangra dance party at 5pm. a fireworks display will cap the evening at 7pm. south street seaport, free admission.
