Out of Town: Manitoga
the skint

In Algonquin, Manitoga means Place of the Great Spirit, and it's also the name of Russel Wright's estate in Garrison, NY.

Wright first moved to Garrison in 1942, when the 75 acres that comprise Manitoga had been devastated by lumbering and quarrying. He spent the rest of his life restoring the land and living in the house and studio he built there, known as Dragon Rock. It is a model of forward-looking ecological design. And the ways in which Wright integrated the interiors and nature create a harmony of genuinely great spirit.

You can visit the house, studio, and garden—tours are Fridays at 11am and Saturdays and Sundays, 11am and 1:30pm, through October. Reserve here.

Collectors may want to mark June 3 in their calendars; that's when Manitoga hosts the annual Russel Wright Award Brunch & Auction, noon-4pm.

While you're in the neighborhood, check out Stone Crop, one town further north in Cold Spring. Originally the home of Anne and Frank Cabot, the big-ticket item here is the 12 acres of gorgeous gardens. Open daily, except Sunday, 10-5.
