There must be a subset of music called alt-hurdy-gurdy.

We know there is, because we've heard it. Piñataland, formed by two Brooklyn musicians—Doug Stone and David Wechsler—combines the past and present in such unexpected ways that their music has the texture and richness of a great novel. It also has the texture and richness of great music.

It's not for everybody—it's a little odd (okay, a lot odd), sprinkling in history, New York and otherwise, touching the circus here, brushing against a Victorian antimacassar there, showing a little Weimar skin.

The band's website is here and there are streamable songs here. And the Wechsler part of the band has a new solo album called "Vacations."
