The Big Guns

MUG's pick for the most notable restaurant openings scheduled, roughly speaking, for fall (or, you know, winter). In addition to those listed, Joël Robuchon, Charlie Trotter, and Gordon Ramsay from Paris, Chicago, and London respectively, are due to land in the spring. Robuchon and Trotter we're looking forward to; Ramsay not so much (his kitchen fits may be memorable, but we can't say the same for his food).

Buddakan NY and Morimoto, Chelsea Market. Philly's big gun restaurateur Stephen Starr sends us his best, Buddakan serving modern Asian, and Morimoto serving contemporary Japanese from chef Masaharu Morimoto.

Cookshop, 156 10th [19th/20th] 212.924.4440. Marc Meyer, one of our favorite chefs, expands beyond his Noho restaurant, Five Points, bringing his vigorous American cooking to West Chelsea.

Country, 90 Mad [29th] 212.889.7100. Geoffrey Zakarian's Country in the Carlton Hotel strikes us as a less snug fit than his Town at the Chambers Hotel. But we'd be foolish to underestimate the estimable Zakarian.

Del Posto, 85 10th [16th] no phone yet. Reaching for the stelle are the stellar Mario Batali, Joseph Bastianich and his madre, Lidia, at this gigundo restaurant where Mario trades his trademark clogs for couture Italian. Lupa's Mark Ladner mans the stoves.

Jovia, 135 E. 62nd [Park/Lex] no phone yet. This looks especially promising: restaurateurs Stephen and Thalia Loffredo (Zoë), team with chef Josh DeChellis (Sumile) for an American eatery with Italian grace notes.

Orto, 41 Mad [25th/26th] no phone yet. Our guess is that Andrew Carmellini's new restaurant by Madison Square Park will have a new name by the time it opens. No guesswork needed to know that whatever Mr. Carmellini (formerly of Cafe Boulud, pictured) cooks is going to be superb.

Sascha, 55-61 Gansevoort [9th/Wash] no phone yet. Sascha Lyon, lately of Pastis, makes his big gun bid. Sure to make a splash when it opens, will it have staying power? Stay tuned.

Telepan, 72 W. 69th [CPW/Col] 212.580.4300. The Upper West Side is lucky to get Bill Telepan back after he left Ansonia (which was on Columbus at 75th) and moved to midtown where he earned his stripes (and three stars) at JUdson Grill. Look for market-driven American cooking.

Thor, 107 Rivington [Ludlow/Essex] 212.796.8040. We'd give Kurt Gutenbrunner's long-aborning spot at the Hotel on Rivington (now open) a few weeks for its shakedown cruise. With time, we're sure it'll be on par with his other terrific restaurants Wallsé and Cafe Sabarsky.
