Around town this weekend, courtesy of the skint: a daily listing of free and cheap things to buy, see, do and eat in New York.

fri-sat 12-10pm: embrace the winter weather at bryant park's winter carnival: ice golf, curling lessons, a hockey shoot out, a summer-themed skating party and silent disco, plus drinks and comfort foods available for purchase from brew house, mighty quinn's, milk truck, pizza moto, breads bakery, and more. free admission.

fri 6, 7:30pm: experience the metropolitan museum of art with a live jazz soundtrack when 15 ensembles perform two sets of music throughout the venue. free with normal 'recommended' museum admission.

fri 6-9pm: free frick: the frick collection opens its doors for free after-hours viewing of masterpieces from the scottish national gallery, plus talks, sketching, and live music. reg. $20 general, $15 seniors, $10 students, or pay-what-you-wish sundays 11am-1pm.

fri-sun: 40+ international dealers bring the work of self-taught artists to the 23rd annual outsider art fair. center 548, $20.

fri-sun: 1500+ anonymously artist-designed postcards are for sale for $85 each at the 17th annual 'postcards from the edge' group art show to benefit visual aids. the preview party (fri) costs an unskintly $50, but the weekend sale is $5 suggested donation. luhring augustine gallery (chelsea).

sat-sun 5pm: the second george sand invitational one-minute play festival features more than 60 short plays written by established and emerging women playwrights. city center stage ii, $20.

sat 7:30pm doors, 8pm show: country bands and performers celebrate dolly parton's birthday at union hall. $8.

sat midnight: 'the female gaze' show sends up the view, the real, and other tv panel shows, but with a cast of over a dozen co-hosts voicing their ill-informed opinions. ucb $5.

sun 2pm: souper bowl sunday! home chefs compete for the best soup in town at the soup takedown, and you get to taste them all. littlefield, $20.

sun thru 2/28: the 23rd annual city bakery hot chocolate festival features a different flavor every day this month. this week: super bowl, ecuadorean, vietnamese cinnamon, lemon, ginger, beer, and banana peel.
