theater… At FringeNYC, 38 Witnessed Her Death, I Witnessed Her Love: The Lonely Secret of Mary Ann Zielonko (Kitty Genovese Story) – an intriguing title, huh? It's the true story of Zielonko's love affair with Genovese and gay life in the 60s. The show is written and performed by LuLu LoLo, directed and choreographed by Jody Oberfelder, and features some of Oberfelder's dancers in the cast. Sounds great to us. Tomorrow night, 7pm; Saturday, 5:30pm; Sunday, 2pm; Tuesday, 4pm and 9:45pm at 440 Studios, 440 Lafayette [Astor/E. 4th]. [Photo: Paul Takeuchi; main image today, Kitty Genovese]

books… Oscar Casares, who first drew notice for his short story collection Brownsville, has written his first novel, Amigoland. It's the tightly-focused story of two elderly, estranged brothers and a cleaning woman who is having a relationship with one of them. The bickering brothers are an endearing geezer duo, and the journey that the three characters take integrates past and present in surprising, even deeply felt, ways.
