singer/songwriter… Almost and Always, the new album by David Mead, is full of the sweetest melodies imaginable, smart lyrics, gorgeous orchestrations and harmonies. On this album he sometimes sounds fully contemporary; at other times he sounds beamed in from 1979 or even 1909. To our ears, that makes for a thoroughly beguiling mix. It's Mr. Mead's unaffected tenor voice, though, that forges such an intimate connection with the listener. Hear samples via iTunes and catch him live at Rockwood Music Hall on September 9th. book… As amusing as it is insightful, Michael Sorkin's Twenty Minutes in Manhattan uses his morning walk from the West Village to Tribeca as springboard for wide-ranging meditations (Mr. Sorkin is an architect, professor, and critic) on what gives a city its character. Jane Jacobs hovers.

theater… Director/choreographer Tommy Tune (much missed these days on Broadway) does a one-nighter benefit of his road show Steps in Time on September 21st at John Jay College's Lynch Theater, backed by the Manhattan Rhythm Kings.
