A new bio of William Randolph Hearst The Uncrowned King by Kenneth Whyte, takes a fresh look at the newspaperman… Abundantly talented, if still under-appreciated singer-songwriter Luke Temple is at Le Poisson Rouge tomorrow night with Jonah Smith. [Photo: Marshall Dackert]

indie rock… Friday: School of Seven Bells plays atmospheric psych-drone-pop at Le Poisson Rouge. Saturday: The Soft Pack strips down and punks up Union Pool. Just announced… 3/25: Bloc Party. 4/5 & 4/6: Mates of State.

photography… Several new shows at the International Center of Photography: Edward Steichen fashion images (175 of them), recent fashion photography, and Martin Munkacsi's exuberant, influential work showing models and athletes in motion.

moviesOf Time and the City is Terence Davie's documentary ode, both funny and elegiac, to Liverpool, his hometown.

acoustic… There may be people who write better broken-hearted ballads than Cheryl Wheeler and there may be people who have better antic notions (a tribute to the potato set to the Mexican Hat Dance), and who write the occasional song charged with social outrage, but there aren't many and we'd be hard-pressed to name them. There's something so completely authentic and empathic about her music—so not young, so not showy, so genuinely wrought from experience, that you could say she is singlehandedly the antidote to American Idol. She's at Joe's Pub on Sunday night, 7:30pm.

art… At the Fountain Gallery, 702 9th [48th] 212.262.2756, there's a new exhibition called Outta Sight: Artists Outside the Mainstream, a show featuring artists who are living and working with mental illness.

out of town… It's $480 each way on Quantas to Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne, flying between February 1 and September 21. You can fly the new A380 on certain days, too. Details.

theater… Two grande dames of the theater—Kathleen Turner and Charles Busch—mix it up in The Third Story at the MCC, a Barabra Stanwyck-esque/sci-fi/fairy tale/ comic mashup by Mr. Busch. It will all make sense when you see it. Or not.
