talk…Kate Ascher, author of The Works: Anatomy of a City (Penguin, $35) talks about the city infrastructure — that couldn't sound much duller, but judging by her book, it should be fascinating. Amanda Burden moderates. It takes place Monday 1/9, 6-8pm at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia [Bleecker] 212.358.6111, $15. Reserve

fiction…A new Paul Auster book is always an event and The Brooklyn Follies, with its surprisingly gentle vibe, may earn him a passel of new fans. (Henry Holt, $24)

learn…Most of the cheese classes at Murray's Cheese, 254 Bleecker [6th/7th] 212.243.3289, sell out quickly, but since it's that post-holiday doldrums time, there are a few coming up with space: Not Your Typical Goat (1/9), Cheese 101 (1/12), and Gin & Cheese (1/19) and a few others. $50 per class.

art…The Jonathan Levine Gallery, 529 W. 20th [10th/11th] 212.243.3822, exhibits 'underground' art, an imprecise term that here covers works influenced by comic books, illustration, grafitti, and pop images. This Saturday, 6pm-9pm, two solo exhibits open — Chris Mars: Subderma and Ray Caesar: Sweet Victory.

shopping…It won't be long before 'stationers' is as archaic-sounding a store concept as 'appetizing' is now. Lincoln Stationers, 1889 Bway [63rd] 212.459.3500, is the latest to give up the ghost: they're going out of business — after 30 years — on January 11th (the building is going to be torn down). Until then, 50% off everything — that includes Filofax, frames, and pens.

sports…Trapeze classes are on now at the Trapeze School NY, taking place in their new heated tent. $57 for most classes.
Our copy editrix, Miss Greenberg, is too busy with important things like adjusting the height on her swivel chair and alphabetizing the takeout menus to do much actual copy editing. If she were to actually wield the red pen (and perhaps someday she will), yesterday's sale listings would have included Norma Kamali rather than Normal Kamali and the Jaded sale would have noted a start date of 1/16.
