movie… It's a little hard to describe the whole vibe of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T — it's a musical fantasy from 1953, with a screenplay and lyrics by Dr. Seuss about a young boy's fears of his piano teacher, Dr. Terwilliker (played by Hans Conried). As an adult, you may thoroughly enjoy this oddity. But if we saw it as a kid, it would have added several years to therapy. It's screening as part of the Socrates Sculpture Park film series on August 1.

art… Socrates Sculpture Park again, this time for the unveiling on Sunday, 2pm, of the extraordinary sculpture by Takashi Horisaki titled "Social Dress New Orleans - 730 Days After." What he's done is essentially made a latex mold of a nearly-destroyed house (slated for demolition) from New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward. Seeing it in this new context, with Manhattan in the background, is sure to be a complex, affecting experience. The artist's blog about the process is here.

indie rock… Friday: Sonic Youth performs their legendary album "Daydream Nation" in its entirety at McCarren Park Pool. Just Announced…9/30: Iron and Wine.
10/06: Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem.
11/13 & 11/14: Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

books… Tonight at KGB, 7pm, there's a benefit for the nonprofit literacy group Behind the Book. It's a conversation with Jonathan Mahler, who wrote the terrific read Ladies and Gentleman, The Bronx is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics, and the Battle for the Soul of a City, now a miniseries on ESPN. Tickets are $10.

sale… Everything is $29.99 at the sale from Calvin Klein, 260 5th [28th/29th] 212.725.5400, from this coming Monday through August 5.
