movie Generally speaking, arts and entertainment critics are not a beloved lot (certainly not by those who make lot but Roger Ebert was a notable exception to the rule. His love of movies, and life itself, was boundless. Life Itself was the name of his memoir and is also the title of a new and affectionate documentary about the man.

photography Photographer Robert Capa was known for the black and white images of the wars he covered. But in civilian life, he also worked in color. A show of these more lighthearted photographs is at Governors Island.

event Le French group Le Fooding heads out to les Rockaways for a three day event, July 11-13, dubbed Fruitstock at the Rockaways, featuring a delicious-sounding lineup of dishes from places like Ivan Ramen and Rockaway Taco as well as food from Mexico City's superchef Enrique Olvera. theater The New York Musical Theatre Festival launches on July 7 with Meeting Our Heroes: A Tribute to the Composers Who Inspire Us at the Laurie Beechman Theater on Monday, July 7 at 7pm. Four emerging songwriters pay tribute to four celebrated composers of musical theater: Charles Strouse, Michael John LaChiusa, Stephen Flaherty and John Bucchino. Tickets are $25.

thurs 6pm doors, 6:30pm dance lesson, 7:30pm live music (thru 7/12): lincoln center's annual midsummer night swing outdoor dance series returns for the season: tonight: the first ladies of disco: martha wash (the original weather girl), linda clifford, and alfa anderson, luci martin + norma jean wright (formerly of chic). $17 (there is usually plenty of room to hear/watch the music outside of the dance floor for free). a silent disco party follows at 10pm, which is free with ticket, $5 without.

thurs 9pm (monthly): guests share journal entries, poetry, original songs and art from their adolescence on stage at lyssa mandel's bitch seat: therapy comedy talk show. this month includes crushes, a figure skater obsession, and an original song. the pit, $8 adv, $10 door ($5 students).

fri: 20+ free and cheap 4th of july events in nyc.

sat thru 8/2: the 23rd annual hot! festival celebrates queer culture with theatre, dance, music, performance art, more. a free opening night party with $5 cocktails kicks things off on saturday. dixon place, free-$15.

sun 2-4pm (sundays thru 8/2): the annual laughter in the park free outdoor comedy series starts the season with standup by reggie watts, kevin avery, adam newman, phoebe robinson and nick vatterott. central park's mineral springs.

sun 7pm doors, 8pm show (sundays thru 7/27): moma's abby aldrich rockefeller sculpture garden opens for the annual free summergarden jazz and contemporary music series. tonight: the new juilliard ensemble performs new music for mixed ensembles.
