Spring may not be in the air yet, but music is.

indie rock… Friday: Toronto's Shout Out Out Out Out are one of our fav-fav-fav-favorite live bands. Let's get electric at Southpaw. Monday: Oh My Rockness & The Oya Festival present Norway vs. NYC with New Violators, The Lionheart Brothers and Die Romantik at Tonic. Just Announced…4/19: Hot Chip. 5/17: Mastodon. 5/25-6/01: Bright Eyes.

classical… What makes Rob Kapilow's series What Makes It Great? great? It's his ability to peel away classical music's sometimes forbidding facade and lead our ears back to the joy, or beauty, or passion they might otherwise miss. He'll be demystifying again on March 19th, 7:30pm, at the Walter Reade. Pianist Jeremy Denk will be playing Beethoven's Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 ("Waldstein"). Tickets are $35 at Alice Tully Hall and Avery Fisher Hall box offices, through CenterCharge at 212.721.6500, or here

countryAllison Moorer has quite a life story to tell. It's hers to tell — we only mention it to point out that when you hear her remarkable voice, it's always telling you a story beyond the story. A couple of facts: her sister is singer Shelby Lynne, her husband is Steve Earle. Earle and Moorer will be performing at the Blue Note March 12th and 13th.

jazz… The formidable Cecil Taylor performs tomorrow night and Saturday, 8pm, at Jazz at Lincoln Center with Henry Grimes on bass and Pheeroan akLaff on drums.

folk… Right now, 'folk' music has such a loser ring to it. But we frequently find it the most satisfying of any genre, whatever that makes us. Case in point: the new album from Mary Chapin Carpenter called "The Calling," an occasionally stompin', intensely personal, and frequently gorgeous collection of 13 songs from this singer-songwriter.

Small correction: In our article on ramen, a slip of the keyboard put the second location of Menchanko Tei at 131 W. 45th [Lex/3rd]. Of course, that should be E. 45th.
