Plus: the skint

out of town… We kid. Governors Island is not out of town, but it does offer a sense of escape. If you, yourself, have been out of town this summer, we'd encourage a short island hop to G.I., particularly this weekend and next, since there will be a Dutch design festival called Pioneers of Change. Among the attractions, a pop-up store of Dutch-designed items, all under $100.

indie rock… Thursday: Lia Ices plays chilling, haunting piano-pop. See her set for free at Sir in Williamsburg. Sunday: Sian Alice Group makes noisy, tribal-rock music that will leave you wowed at Union Hall. Just Announced… 11/8: Monsters of Folk. 11/18: Big Star. 11/22: Echo & The Bunnymen.

books… Themed readings, panel discussions, and free-range authors make up the Brooklyn Book Festival this Sunday at Brooklyn's Borough Hall, 10-6, free. You want names? They got 'em: Francine Prose, Russell Banks, Jennifer 8. Lee, Nelson George, Pete Hamill, Edwidge Danticat, Steven Millhauser, and scads of others.

theater… Not much could rise to the heights of Tracy Letts' August: Osage County, so the playwright's new work, Superior Donuts, is best taken on its own terms; and, anyway, whatever Letts writes is okay by us. This one stars Michael McKean and previews begin next Wednesday at one of our favorite places to see a play – the Music Box.

spaces… Twenty-nine thousand acres of land – about 14% of NYC, is part of the city's Parks department. And one of the key figures amidst all those trees and flowers and greens is public garden designer Lynden B. Miller. You've seen her work in Bryant Park, Madison Square Park, the NY Botanical Garden, and Central Park's Conservatory Garden. She has a new book called Parks, Plants, and People: Beautifying the Urban Landscape, and you can hear her talk on Wednesday, September 16th, 6:30pm, at the Municipal Art Society ($15).

wine… Dilek Caner, a Sommeliere and teacher, begins a four-week intro course on wine beginning September 23rd in midtown. $345.
