olympics We're three weeks out from Rio and whatever it has in store. To get you into the spirit, The Last Gold, opening today, tells the story of the U.S. women's 1976 swim team, which, to everyone's amazement, beat the thoroughly doped East Germans… You can't help but be inspired by The Three-Year Swim Club: The Untold Story of Maui's Sugar Ditch Kids and Their Quest for Olympic Glory by Julie Checkoway, about some very poor kids who take on the challenge of their lives… And the story of Jesse Owens, told by Jeremy Schaap in Triumph, remains the gold standard of Olympics wins.

book Charlie Whistler's Omnium Gatherum will enchant you if you're a young boy, but don't be surprised if the enchantment works on all ages and genders. Subtitled Campfire Stories and Adirondack Adventures, this 'fictional scrapbook' by Philip Delves Broughton uses the letters and notes sent between members of the Whistler family, as well as photos, watercolors, and ephemera to tell the tales. The narrator says,
"…I can almost hear these generations of Whistlers talking to me. It's like they're sitting in the cabin, their feet up on a stool, slapping the arm of their chair and howling with laughter one minute, leaning forward and talking in a spooky whisper the next."
