movies Films on the Green, the film festival that screens French movies in NYC parks (free), celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer. To mark the milestone, the organizers asked various filmmakers and other artists to choose a film for the lineup. Jim Jarmusch picked Godard's Contempt. Laurie Anderson went for Port of Shadows. Starts June 2.

fri 5-10pm (fridays thru 9/15): picnic at bryant park: the park lends out over 100 picnic blankets for free every friday through the summer for you to lounge on. food, beer + wine will be available for purchase.

fri 5:30-9pm: governors island stays open late just for one night, giving the public a rare chance to catch the sunset from our city's oasis. michael arenella and his dreamland orchestra will provide live music, and food + drinks will be available for purchase. free admission, $2 round-trip ferry ride.

fri 6:30pm doors, 7pm show: new music ensemble exceptet performs a program of premieres and commissions in an intimate loft setting. a free wine reception follows. 1 rivington (les), $15 general, $5 students.

fri thru mon: quad cinema (greenwich village) presents a ryuichi sakamoto film retrospective with sakamoto and david byrne in person at select screenings. the eight film series includes merry christmas mr. lawrence, the last emperor, high heels, and more. $18.

sat + sun 1-6pm: 100 artists across all media open their doors to the public for the annual dumbo open studios. free.

sun 8am run, 9:30am-4pm festival: celebrate japanese culture at the 11th annual japan day, a festival with food, traditional and contemporary performances, family-friendly activities, and a four-mile run. central park's bandshell area, free admission.

sun 7:30pm: loving mothers will join their comedian offspring on stage for the fully improvised 'i love you, mom!' show, an annual mother's day tradition at magnet theater (midtown west). $7.
